SPRAY DRYING

Synergy Spray Systems offers advanced solutions for industrial spray drying systems—supporting applications from food processing to pharmaceuticals. Our spray drying nozzles, including high-pressure atomizing nozzles and fine droplet spray nozzles, are engineered for optimal performance, fine control, and reliable droplet consistency.

Achieving Low Flow Rates at High Pressure

Spray drying requires a low liquid flow rate into a high-temperature airstream to ensure full evaporation before the droplets reach the chamber floor. Incomplete evaporation leads to wet powder accumulation and inconsistent drying results.

However, maximizing atomization—breaking liquid into fine droplets—typically requires higher pressure, which can inadvertently increase flow rate.

Solution: Specialized spray drying nozzles are engineered with swirl chambers that prioritize atomization over flow. These chambers convert more of the liquid’s kinetic energy into fine spray, enabling fine droplet formation at controlled flow rates.
These fine nozzles operate at extremely high pressures to maintain energy levels required for atomization.
Spray nozzle tips and internal geometries are designed to balance performance and flow control.

Importance of Droplet Size in Spray Drying

Evaporation speed and drying efficiency directly depend on surface area exposure. Finer droplets
Provide greater surface area per unit volume.
Accelerate water evaporation from the sprayed slurry.
Enhance drying speed and thermal efficiency.
Reducing average droplet diameter by half can double the surface area, increasing the drying force of the system. Thus, spray drying nozzles are purpose-built to produce uniform fine droplets under high-pressure conditions.
Importance of Droplet Size in Spray Drying

Consistency in Droplet Size Distribution

Larger droplets may remain wet, fall to the chamber floor, or cause sticking.

Medium-sized droplets may dry inconsistently or be overheated.

Uniform droplet sizes ensure optimal drying without overheating or powder degradation.

Wear & Durability Under High Pressure

High pressures
Abrasive liquids with suspended solids
These conditions accelerate nozzle wear, particularly at the orifice and swirl chamber.
To combat this:
Synergy’s nozzles feature tungsten carbide swirl chambers, extending operational life.
The modular design allows for cost-effective part replacement—only worn components are swapped, not the full assembly.
